On October 20, 2023, the European Space Agency (ESA), in cooperation with the Ministry of Development and Technology (MRiT) and the Polish Space Agency (POLSA), completed the substantive assessment of the recruitment of experiments to be carried out on the International Space Station (ISS). A team of CMPW PAN employees, including Jakub Włodarczyk, Michał Sobota, Mateusz Stojko, Monika Musiał-Kulik and Katarzyna Jelonek, proposed an experiment that was qualified to take part in the Axiom 4 mission, planned for October 2024. The experiment "Biodegradable polymer drug delivery systems in low "Earh orbirt" (acronym LEO-DDS) will involve assessing the stability of polymer controlled drug release systems in the conditions prevailing on the ISS. It will be examined, among others: the impact of microgravity on the diffusion of selected active substances through the polymer carrier, the impact of increased radiation levels on the degradation of biodegradable polyesters and the effect of shielding drugs against cosmic radiation by the polymer matrix. The implementation time is estimated at 3 years. The obtained results, due to the current lack of research in this direction, will significantly contribute to the development of knowledge about both polymers and controlled drug release systems. The release of therapeutic substances from polymeric carriers may in the future become one of the main ways to support the physical and mental health of astronauts during missions.

On 12 June 2023, the staff of CMPW PAN organised a demonstration of experiments thematically related to the curriculum of grade 8 of a primary school. The demonstration was attended by grade 8 pupils from the Adam Mickiewicz Primary School No. 7 in Ruda Śląska. At the beginning, Wojciech Wałach, Ph.D., Professor of CMPW PAN, presented the Centre and the scientific activities conducted at the institute in the form of a lecture.

On 3 June 2023, in Wilcza, the Centre for Polymer and Carbon Materials PAS participated with demonstrations introducing the world of chemistry at the Family Festival organised by the School and Kindergarten Complex. The Centre's employees (M. Siwy, M. Musioł, A. Hercog) presented over a dozen attractive experiments for both children and adults, including the "Chemical egg", "Lava lamp", "Volcano in the kitchen", "Chemical garden", "Colourful swirl in milk", "Ship in a bottle". Participants at the event were able to take part in the experiments. The Centre's demonstrations were one of the many attractions prepared for children and their parents at the event.

On October 7, 2022, the Centre for Polymer and Carbon Materials Polish Academy of Sciences participated in the "XVIII Science Day". This year's edition of the Science Day was organized in a revitalized space around the water tower built in 1909 at ul. Jana Zamoyskiego 2. The patron of this year's edition was the Silesian Park of Medical Technology - Kardio-Med Silesia and the Professor Zbigniew Religa Foundation of Cardiac Surgery Development. The purpose of the Science Day was to promote scientific and technical achievements among the city's residents, especially among schoolchildren, and to stimulate interests in an interactive, accessible and unconventional way, to encourage closer learning about areas that may seem difficult, unknown, sometimes - seemingly not very interesting. The employees of the Centre presented interesting and effective chemical and physical experiments.

On 17/03/2022, the Centre for Polymer and Carbon Materials of the Polish Academy of Sciences organized the conference The Silesian Meetings on Polymer Materials POLYMAT2022. The conference was dedicated to the memory of Prof. Andrzej Dworak, an outstanding scientist in the field of polymers, a long-term director of the CMPW PAN.

We had the honor of hosting an outstanding lecturers: prof. Brigitte Voit (Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research, Dresden, Germany), prof. Rainer Haag (Freie Universität Berlin, Germany), prof. Stergios Pispas (National Hellenic Research Foundation, Athens, Greece), prof. Axel Müller (Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz, Germany) and prof. Petar Petrov (Institute of Polymers, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia, Bulgaria). These scientists presented works thematically related to the scientific interests of prof. Dworak, which included nanomaterials with special properties, as well as their potential application.

In short

The Center belongs to category A of scientific facilities in Poland. It was established on January 1, 2007 as a result of a merger of the Center of Polymer Chemistry of PAN in Zabrze and the Institute of Carbochemistry of PAN in Gliwice – two centers of the Polish Academy of Sciences which, for many years, had been conducting systematic work on the production and properties of macromolecular polymer and carbon materials.
